Emdocolin 10%

Water-soluble powder for oral use

Composition

Colistin sulfate 100 mg eq. 1 900 000 I.U. per gram of powder.

Pharmacotherapeutic category

Intestinal antiinfectives (antibiotics: colistin).

Properties

Colistin (Polymyxin E) is an antibiotic belonging to the polymyxin group. The antibacterial action of polymyxins is based on a passive interaction with the bacterial cell wall. This implicates that polymyxins also are able to inactivate bacterial endotoxins.

Colistin exerts concentration-dependent activity against Gram-negative bacteria (e.g. E. coli, Salmonella spp.). Following oral administration high concentrations are achieved in the gastrointestinal tract, i.e. the target site, due to the poor absorption of the substance.

Indications

For the treatment and metaphylaxis of enteric infections caused by bacteria susceptible to colistin.

Dosage, route and method of administration

Oral administration (drinking water, milk): 5 mg colistin sulfate eq. 95 000 IU per kg BW or 0.5 gram Emdocolin 10% powder per 10 kg BW per day for 3 to 7 days, in one or two administrations.

Shelf-life

2 years.
